Getting Pregnant At Age 40

Pregnancy is not always easy to achieve, but getting pregnant at 40 can take a toll on you, both physically and mentally. Some women who are in their forties have an easy time conceiving, others may need that extra help. There are quite a few steps you can do to make the odds better that you will be able to conceive at 40.

Try:

Do not think just because you are 40 that you will not be able to get pregnant. Research has shown that engaging in intercourse daily is the #1 way to conceive. Prepare yourself for this activity by coming up with creative ways to keep these episodes full of excitement. Keep a relaxed state of mind and pressure-free as well. Most doctors say it takes about a year for couples under age 35 to conceive, but if you are older, after you have been trying for 6 months, you might need some medical advice.

Extra Steps:

If you are 40 or more, and have been unsuccessfully trying to conceive for 6-8 months, it is the time now to take extra steps.

* Find out what the difficulty is first. Take your spouse or partner with you to do any tests that may be necessary.
* Men can improve the motility in their sperm by improving their diet, getting lots of exercise, taking vitamins, and not wearing tight-fitting briefs or boxers, or sitting in hot tubs for long periods of time.
* Women can improve fertility by getting your weight under control or even using some herbal supplements.
* Ovulation predictor kits can be helpful. You take a daily urine sample to see when specific hormones reach their peak either the days or hours before ovulation.

If these steps do not help, you need to talk to your physician to see what type of medical help you can use to improve your chances of conception.

There are a lot of things you can do before undergoing in-vitro fertilization, which is both hard and expensive. Having a baby at 40 is not as big a challenge as it used to be. Talk to your doctor if you are having problems, and remember to relax and keep a positive attitude on your way to becoming a parent.
