My Psoriasis Story

I figured with the millions of people suffering from psoriasis, telling my story might help some people have a more positive outlook about their situation as well.  It was the fall of 2007 when I first noticed a couple small lesions on the back of my head.  I couldn't see them, I just felt them when I was in the shower.  I asked my parents to take a look and they told me I should go get them checked out.  So, off to the doctor I went to see if I could get a diagnosis.  He looked at my head and quickly told me that I had psoriasis.  I had zero clue what that meant, so I asked him if it was serious.  He told me that it could get pretty severe in some cases.  I went home pretty dejected after finding out it was a chronic skin condition.

I quickly went to work finding out all the information on psoriasis that I could.  I learned all about the different types of psoriasis.  Pictures of people who had 80-90% coverage on their body came up, and that freaked me out more than anything.  I remember wondering "Is this going to happen to me?".  The doctor prescribed me a cream to put on my skin and solution for my scalp.  These things really do a good job of keeping the skin breakouts to a minimum.

While creams and solutions and shampoos can do a good job of controlling breakouts, I have found that nothing works better than eating right and getting exercise.  Eating tons of fruits and vegetables is a great way to keep your psoriasis breakouts to a minimum.  Also, avoiding alcohol is a must.  If you are one of those people who has to have a drink, there is no way the psoriasis is going to go completely away.  Alcohol is the worst thing for my psoriasis.

If I could give one piece of advice for people with psoriasis, it would be to never give up.  Yes, psoriasis is a chronic disease that will probably be with you forever.  But that doesn't mean it needs to control what you do and how you live.  Make a promise to yourself to make some positive lifestyle choices, and in the long run everything will turn out just fine.
