Are Adult Nappies the Right Choice for You?

Incontinence is not an issue that many adults freely discuss. However, it is estimated that over twelve million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence, and even a percentage of the population suffers from fecal incontinence, although it is less common. Around 15-30% of people over age sixty admit to incontinence of some sort. Women often suffer from incontinence more than men do. Although there are methods such as medicine, surgery, and therapy to treat incontinence, many who suffer from the problem wear incontinence products such as adult nappies, (also referred to as diapers, pads, liners, or padded underwear), to prevent embarrassment or other issues due to their inability to control their bodily functions.

Adult incontinence products can be used for many different reasons and help those suffering from incontinence continue with their lifestyles as normal without fear of accidents. Although the usage of the products may produce initial embarrassment, most find that the comfort of knowing they have protection is far greater than the risk of losing urinary or bowel control in public. If you are trying to decide which type of product is best for you, there are a few things to consider.

Some people have trouble with incontinence while sleeping. There are certain products designed for overnight use that would be best in these cases. For those needing all day protection, there are many options. Choosing a product with a medium absorbency level is generally a good place to start. If you find that leaks are occurring, then you would need to move to a higher absorbency level. If medium absorbency products work well, or even seem to provide more absorbency than necessary, protective or padded underwear may be a better option. These provide a bit less protection than other products, but provide a slimmer fit, making it more like real underwear. They can also be pulled on and off like underwear, whereas other diaper products must be fastened with tape or Velcro, much like diapers for children. However, that also means you will have to undress from the waist down in order to change the padded underwear. Protective pads are also an option for those with lower absorbency needs. They tend to be the cheapest option; however many that begin with protective pads often will graduate their way toward products offering more protection. Pads would not be an effective option if you suffer from fecal incontinence.

Older people are not the only ones to suffer from incontinence. People who are bedridden, or those bound to wheelchairs may need to wear incontinence products. Also, many women suffer from incontinence following childbirth and may need to buy such products. There are even some that choose to wear the products based upon their profession, such as astronauts or guards that cannot leave their post.

Incontinence is very common and you should not feel embarrassed to use adult nappies. By choosing the product that is best for you, you can continue doing all the things you love, without your lifestyle being compromised.
