Make Positive Changes To Beat Depression

Almost no one thinks about how to beat depression until he or she has pondered the answer to this question: Am I depressed? A yes answer indicates the awareness of a never-ending sadness. It also highlights the need for achievement and maintenance of a healthy behavior. Thus it calls for a series of positive changes.

Each of those changes should involve one of the three factors that can shape a positive behavior. One of those three groups incorporates the various enabling factors. A person stands a better chance for coming out of a depression by recognizing the skills, resources and capabilities that he or she possesses.

A depressed man or woman often overlooks his or her knowledge. That mistake then becomes a predisposing factor, one that contributes to his or her depressed feelings. Frequently, it supplements the harmful effects of acquired attitudes and beliefs, along with confused perceptions and misplaced values.

Lack of reinforcing factors can also drive someone over the brink and into a feeling of depression. That fact underscores the importance of praise, encouragement and respectful recognition. By presenting someone with a few kind words, a friend or loved one can help him or her to develop a healthier behavior pattern.

Of course, once someone has stopped feeling so down and out, then he or she must work to maintain an optimistic state of mind. He or she must avoid focusing on mistakes. That suggestion should not encourage someone to make excuses for such errors, but rather to learn from them.

When others are not there to offer a word of praise, then a cheerful person does not hesitate to experiment with a bit of self-praise. While it is good to be humble, it does not pay to be diffident. Our behaviors tend to reflect the thoughts that are swirling around in our head.

Simple and Effective Ways to Finding Happiness

You can often hear people making comments like “I just want to be happy”. Then, why don’t you? After all, our happiness is our responsibility. A common mistake that we have about finding happiness is that we tend to look for it from someone or somewhere else. We rely on other people or outside sources to bring happiness into our lives; we want them to make us happy. Others look for contentment in money, material things or recognition. And because of this, we fail to reach the level of happiness that we need in our lives. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a hypocrite. I cannot say that I am 100 percent happy and that I don’t splurge on the glory of capriciousness. I do. But what I have realized is that there are other ways, effective ways, to find real happiness in life.

The first thing that we need to do is to stop comparing ourselves to others. We may be above or below them, either way the comparison will only frustrate us. As the old saying goes – “Never compare yourself to anyone because two people can look at the exact same thing, yet see it differently.” Second, we should make it a habit to count our blessings. Even if we lack a lot of things in our lives, we are still blessed compared to others. And when we start to recognize and appreciate these things, we will certainly live a happy life.

This may sound overrated, but getting in touch with our souls is still helpful in our search for real happiness. We must reconcile with ourselves and allow our emotional wounds to heal. As what people always say, to forgive is to forget. Once we let go of the pains and heartaches that we have had in the past and learn to forgive the people who have caused them, then we can be completely happy. Lastly, we should reconnect with our childhood dreams. A child’s dream is always unselfish and innocent. Reconnecting with it can lead us to our life’s calling. It will help get rid of all the negativity that we have in our lives.

What is Meditation Really? The Ultimate Answer

The true purpose of meditation is to acquaint mind with virtue. When mind concentrates on virtue, it becomes quiet and peaceful. With that peace follows freedom from worries and mental noise. This state is the true state of bliss. When mind is at peace, we can remain happy even in the worst of times. But if mind is not peaceful and occupied by disoriented thoughts, the most pleasant situations can’t make us happy. Meditation is very significant practice to gain control over the mind.

When we enter meditation, we are concentrating our mind on virtuous object that becomes responsible for our inner peace in the future. Normally we live in the world of delusion our entire lives. That doesn’t allow us to experience mental peace. Nonetheless, once in a while every one of us feels true inner peace naturally as we must have concentrated on virtuous objects somewhere in our previous lives. Virtue is an object; concentration on it causes us to experience peace of mind. Similarly an object that causes un-peaceful state such as anger or greed, are the non-virtuous objects.

Keeping this Buddhist philosophy in mind, we can divide meditation practice in two categories viz. Analytical meditation and placement meditation. Analytical meditation aims at contemplating on the inner meaning of a spiritual instruction or statement we have read or heard. By reflecting upon these instructions deeply, we can induce a virtuous state of mind. Now we have got basics set for placement meditation. Conclusion derived from analytical meditation becomes object of placement meditation. Purpose of placement meditation involves single-pointed attention on the virtuous state originated from contemplation.

In Buddhist tradition, analytical meditation is referred as contemplation and placement meditation is called meditation in general. There are various techniques of Buddhist meditation for beginners which can be divided into these two types like Vipassana, loving kindness meditation and Mindfulness meditation.

Apart from its spiritual significance, meditation has many other health related benefits too. It is the most effective remedy for natural anxiety relief, it helps restoring balance between mind and body and achieving perfect wellness.

How To Overcome Depression Without Medication

Depression is something that many people struggle with everyday. If you have never been depressed than it is hard to imagine what life is like for those who have. Everything becomes a chore, sometimes even getting out of bed takes everything you have. In extreme cases medication is prescribed but for those who are interested in a more natural approach then here are some ideas.

People that are serious about doing what it takes to overcome depression are usually open to new ideas or at least ideas that don't involve going to some doctor that simply wants to prescribe medication as a first attack. There are so many causes of depression that to think that some SSRI is going to be the magic cure-all in every case is ludicrous.

There are many effective therapies to help overcome depression and anxiety for that matter, that they should both be approached from a multi-angled attack. Often the reason for depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain but there are many activities that improve the brains chemistry in general that even if they don't eliminate the depression entirely, they are almost guaranteed to at least improve the situation in some way if not in many ways.

Exercise is almost a cure-all. There are so many benefits to exercise that if everyone would simply do that one thing everyday the medical establishment would go bankrupt. Nutrition plays a very important role in the body’s functions including the body’s ability to regulate itself hormonally. Nutrition and exercise together will have an absolutely amazing effect on depression and in fact on many maladies.

The problem is that even when people think they are eating healthy they usually aren't. Even if you eat your nine to twelve servings of vegetables each day, if you are not getting them from truly 100% organic sources then they are sorely depleted from the proper nutrient profile. One trick to ensure you get the nutrients you need without consuming twenty pounds of vegetables each day is to juice the vegetables. So in closing it is a great idea to eat healthy, exercise daily, and get plenty of rest, once you have mastered all of these things and you are still depressed then it might be time to go to the doctor but not a minute before.

Depressed? Could B Vitamins Help You?

While many people experience depression and other mood disorders, most people fail to realize that very often, the source of these disorders is actually medical.  We tend to think that there is something wrong with our minds, not that our bodies simply are not getting what they need to function properly.  Today many integrative health professionals – which are health professionals that rely on both conventional and alternative medicine to treat the patient in a holistic way – are turning towards supplementing with B vitamins as a part of the recommended treatment for those that are experiencing anxiety and depression.

Recent evidence suggests that the levels that most mainstream doctors though were acceptable for the B vitamins is actually seriously low.  In fact, while B12 levels of 200 were once thought to be adequate, we now know that levels up to 400 are low enough to cause serious neurological side effects including severe depression, confusion and other serious issues. Other vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms can include cardiovascular illness, low energy and even anorexia.   Now, it is recommended that for optimal health, most people need to maintain levels of 800 or higher.

According to James Gordon, MD, a psychiatrist,  his clinical experience has shown that there are times when simply adding B-12 or folate to the supplementation regime of depressed patients can be enough to seriously reduce their symptoms.  The reasoning behind why this is the case is that  the B vitamins are so important to the metabolism of our cells, especially our bodies ability to respond to stress.  Several studies have supported the idea that lower levels of B12, B6 and folate are linked to depression.

If you are experiencing depression, you may want to speak with your health care provider about whether taking supplemental b vitamins or B12 shots is right for you.  Who knows, it could help reduce your symptoms!

Tackling Tiredness and Fatigue

According to Dr. Frank S. Caprio a prominent psychiatrist, fatigue is so common in the current society that people are almost adopting it as a way of life. What many people may not know is that if they are always feeling tired, it is the body trying to communicate that the body is lacking something and unless addressed can lead to more severe problems. Most people assume that the solution to being tired all the time is taking sleeping pills or stimulants and sleeping it through without addressing the root cause of the problem. Do you know why you are fatigued all the time?

There are many causes for tiredness and range from physical activities to poor dieting and mental factors. We live in a very dynamic society where people are always busy such that they do not even spare some time to address the root of their problems, preferring a shortcut to dealing with them. Most patients with chronic tiredness and fatigue confess that the root cause of the problem may be muscular exertion and mental effort although they never get to address it soon enough. Stress, overworking, lack of sleep and taking too much medicinal drugs directly result in mental and physical exhaustion.

The best way to address tiredness and fatigue is resting, both mentally and physically. However, depending on the causes for tiredness, it may be necessary to involve in other activities that may take your mind off your daily concerns like meditation and gaming. If you are certain that your tiredness is as a result of poor dieting, then you must know that the foods you eat must be balanced with enough energy and fiber to give you back what you spend. Although this may seem obvious, many people overlook the importance of eating well and drinking enough water to wash off all the debris and toxins in the body. If this does not happen, you will feel clumsy, tired and restless.

Overcoming Anxiety: Learning To Relax

If you are a stressed or high-strung person, then overcoming anxiety can be an incredibly difficult thing for you to do. Anxiety has several types of manifestation. Some people worry about social situations. Others get anxious about situations in which they are expected to perform publicly (everything from speeches to music performances). Others simply get very anxious about having their plans in order, and worry more than others about something going wrong and not working as planned.

No matter what type of anxiety you have, if it is disrupting your life or making things difficult for you, it’s serious enough to work on how to fix it.

How To Approach Overcoming Anxiety: Two Angles

There are two basic things happening when you have anxiety, and therefore two different angles from which you can approach the issue.

On one hand, there are the things that happen that make you anxious: you have a presentation to give, you have a vacation to plan. Then on the other, there is your reaction to things that happen: you get worked up as the audience arrives, you get nervous that something will go wrong or over-react to small, unexpected events.

Making It Better

If certain situations are your triggers for anxiety, then do what you can to get control of the situation ahead of time. This works better for some types of anxiety more than others. For example, if you get very anxious when approaching a deadline, do as much of your work ahead of time as possible so that it’s finished well before that deadline approaches. If you get nervous in front of crowds, look for roles that utilize your skills; but if you are a musician or performer, your skills and passion will require you to work past the anxiety, because you should stay true to your goals.

You can also work to help train yourself to react differently when things that make you anxious start to happen. The best way to do this is different for every person, the most effective way of overcoming anxiety is to talk to a therapist experienced with the issue, who can help you find the best plan for you.

Chronic Insomnia: Ideas For Addressing The Problem

Chronic insomnia is an unseen but miserable affliction. People dealing with chronic insomnia often struggle with many aspects of daily life. It can cause people to fall behind in their work and familial obligations, and it’s not uncommon for college students with chronic insomnia to fail out of school, or for adults to be fired from their jobs due to the negative consequences of this unseen struggle.

Yet even more frustrating for people with chronic insomnia, is that it’s often very difficult to know why it is happening, and to find an effective treatment to make the problem go away and let the person truly rest.

How do you know if you have chronic insomnia?

One or two sleepless nights, or having trouble getting to sleep when you are stressed may be early hints that insomnia could be a problem down the line, but they do not themselves a diagnosis make. Chronic insomnia is a much, much more notable problem with sleep.

Different doctors may have different criteria for exactly what qualifies as chronic insomnia, but the bottom line is that, if it is causing problems in your life, then it’s a problem worth seeing your doctor about.

Treatment Options

There are several ways that doctors can attempt to treat and insomnia and help you get the sleep you so desperately need. There are several prescriptions available that may help the problem, although some may have negative side effects or may slowly become less effective over time.

Another way to address the problem is by talking with a therapist. This is effective only if it’s believed that emotional or psychological stress is a contributing factor, and that the chronic insomnia is, in fact, a symptom rather than an isolated condition.

Another thing doctors can do is to have a CAT scan to see if anything irregular is happening neurologically that would keep you from being able to sleep.

If you are unable to afford the doctor or want to try to address the problem on your own, (or if you fear you’re developing chronic insomnia and want to stop it before it arrives fully), then make sure you have a proper pillow and mattress, and that you don’t watch TV or browse the internet before you go to bed.
