How Exercise Can Combat Depression

You're tired, energy-less, and seem to be falling into a funk of wanting to move as little as possible, and eat whatever is in sight. Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness make you want to curl up in a ball and shut out whatever responsibility you might have. Does this sound familiar? These feelings are more common than you might think. Studies show that those who exercise regularly are more likely to have a positive mood, and lower rates of depression. Could exercise really be a cure to lessening the effects of depression? The answer is yes. How is this possible? Well, those who exercise tend to have an improvement in their positive self image. Although working out may not seem extremely fun and exciting while you are doing it, the feeling you get after you done can't be topped. This feeling termed a, "runners high," is somewhat euphoric, and makes you feel like life is alright. Exercise releases a chemical in your body called endorphins, which spur this temporary mood lift. These endorphins are in your brain, and can reduce your perspective of pain.  Exercise can also reduce stress, strengthen your heart, reduce your blood pressure, lower your risk of diseases, lower your body fat, increase your bone mass, and the list goes on and on. All of these factors make your chances of depression lessened.

Far too often it seems that people are turning straight to prescriptions to find help for their depression, without even trying any other means. Although in some cases, completely necessary, prescriptions can be addictive and can cause an unhealthy relationship between the medicine and the patient. Part of the reason individuals fall into a depression is due to their low self esteem because they may feel overweight and out of shape. Exercise is a safe route of treatment, and won't cause any harmful side effects, as some medications can, and can help burn stomach fat, that might be a factor in causing that low self esteem in the first place. Studies have shown that for patients with depression to see the benefits that exercise can offer them, they need to be engaging in about three hours of exercise per weeks. Of course those with depression should see a doctor, and be properly evaluated, but if you are feeling down a great way to get a natural pick-me-up is by getting moving!

Gym Equipment at Home keeps you fit

People sign up for monthly subscriptions at the gym or fitness center as if that act alone will get them into shape. However, the hard part is getting yourself to go to that place on a regular basis. Most people do not go as often as they intended, and let their subscription money go to waste. Reflexology as a Therapeutic Massage Method

There are many different therapy techniques used for massage.  Different techniques include the Swedish massage, Acupucture, Trigger Point therapy, and Deep Tissue therapy.  All the techniques focus on applying some sort of pressure to the body in order to relieve tension, improve circulation, and relieve sore muscles.  The methods are all very different in how they approach the body.  Different charts and graphs of the body are used.  Also, the various methods acknowledge different points on the body to focus on depending on each person’s personal need for massage.

One type of massage that is used is Reflexology.  This technique uses pressure in the feet, hands, and ears.  When pressure is applied to specific parts of, say the feet, it is said that there are reactions or reflexes in other parts of the body, including organs.  The end result is also said to bring relief to soreness or tension in other regions of the body, and helps immensely with circulation.  Also there have been links between reflexology and decreased amounts of migraine and even infertility.

So why are the hands, feet, and ears the only body parts that are focused on? According to the Reflexology Association of Canada, the feet and hands have multiple pressure or reflex points that when activated, cause reactions in other parts of the body, including muscles and organs.  The feet, especially, have many nerve endings and small muscles that are said to connect to many different zones of the body when pressure is applied. Also, circulation flow, or “Qi,” is rejuvenated through reflexology. This is very important for your life source because you constantly use your body- sometimes pushing it beyond what it can do.

Reflexology is only one of the many techniques used in massage therapy.  It is unique because it focuses primarily on the feet, hands, and ears.  It is also different from other techniques because it does not use oils or lotions on the body.  Reflexology is one of many relaxing, rejuvenating therapies used throughout the world.
