Vegetarianism has been around a long time. The book of Genesis advocates a diet of fruit, seeds and nuts, which is clearly vegetarian. Some other roots of vegetarianism date to the early history of Eastern nations. Analysis of the intestinal contents of mummies have unearthed Egyptians as yet another race of vegetarians.

Real strides in scientific vegetarianism came out of World War One, when food scarcity prompted scientists in the US to re-evaluate the national diet. Forced to find alternative sources of protein, they discovered healthy benefits of non-meat eating at the same time. The US way of handling meat shortages was adopted by other countries as well. Denmark in 1917 adopted a simple, meatless wartime diet based on whole grains, vegetables, and dairy products. The result was overall improved health and lowered mortality rates.

During World War Two, Norwegians drastically cut their meat consumption, depending on cereals, potatoes and other vegetables. Once again, vegetarianism improved the country’s health and lowered mortality rates. Not surprisingly, these health statistics flipped over when the war ended and normal meat consumption resumed.

For many people, a taste for meat is an acquired one, starting as early as in childhood. For those who choose to skip the steak and hamburgers for healthier option such as salad and juice or smoothie, the taste of meat usually fades fast, with the endless variety of protein rich plant food available these days and the tasty ways they are being combined, seasoned and cooked in these modern vegetarian times.

Flower Cuisine

There are edible flowers, but they are not your usual desserts, like the colorful sugar flowers that are used as cupcake toppers. Sure there are broccoli and cauliflower, which look like vegetables but are actually flower buds. However, what we mean are those beautiful flowers which you would be more likely to put in your bouquet than in your mouth. Do not, however, think of going to a flower shop, and start tasting each one of the flowers on display. That would be a dangerous thing to do, because if a flower is not edible, it might be poisonous.

High-end restaurants like garnishing their food with flowers, such as nasturtiums, roses, calendula, violets, Johnny-jump-ups, and squash blossoms. Flowers, like daylilies and asparagus are made as hot soup. Jasmine, chamomile and even hibiscus are popular teas around the world. Favorite salad ingredients are lilac, violets and dandelions, which in some countries are eaten boiled or raw.

Some food products that are made out of a flower ingredient have become very popular in the world. Example is the sunflower oil, which has become a widespread cooking ingredient. Also famous is the jasmine syrup of the French, which in the United States, is being used as ingredient for the jasmine scones and marshmallows. The elderflower cordial, which is a softdrink made largely from a refined sugar and water solution, uses the flower of the elderberry.

Be wary though in eating food with flower ingredient, and much more in cooking with flower ingredient. There are flowers that are truly edible, but when not correctly prepared or cooked, they become toxic. Others are outright poisonous, except that they look exactly like the edible ones. Sometimes, however, the problem is not with the edible flowers but with the person eating them. There are people who have allergic reactions or who are attacked with asthma after eating a particular ingredient of a food.

3 Simple Ways to Stay Healthy This Summer

When the summer time comes, most of us our hit with a nice contrast in our wants and desires. We want to walk around the beach and enjoy the breeze, and maybe even passively show off our bodies at the same time to all the people passing by. And yet we also want to go to all those cookouts and take seconds on the BBQ, drink more beer than we should, and shun all manner of healthy eating!

Luckily, it doesn't have to be this way. In fact, there are 3 simple rules you can follow for the summer that will make it much easier to keep your figure and simply stay healthy - and for many, even improve your physique.

The first thing is to start the season with a detox. This could be any manner of detox that works best for you. For some it's a pure raw food diet, or for others it's removing cheese and milk from the diet, and yet for others it's simply using detox drinks. Whatever it is, just be sure you stick with it for the time being and follow the rules so you will reap all the benefits of doing the detox.

The second action you want to take is make a commitment to drinking lots of real juice this summer. I'm not talking about juice with lots of sugars - real of fake, nor drinks without any real fruit juice. I'm talking real juice, like something from a juicer or a juice bar. If you were to replace all that booze you'd otherwise drink with juice, you'd do very well this summer to not gain any weight. My favorites is to buy beetroot juice and drink that every morning - just be sure to brush your teeth afterwards or else you might be walking around purple teeth!

The third method I want to mention is the simple use of ditching the car and riding the bike. It is summer time after all, right? It feels so good to stroll through my neighborhood streets on my Raleigh Cruiser bike. I get to save money, be outdoors, and burn calories at the same time. Let other people sit in the traffic, not me!

These 3 tricks can give you a great boost for the summer, and once fall comes around you will not have gained any weight! And maybe, just maybe, you'll have picked up a habit or two you'll want to keep up for the rest of the year!

Diets that Improve Blood Sugar

For patients with diabetes, sometimes knowing what to eat is very difficult.  There are many different methods out there to help people with diabetes improve their diet.  Diets that work for diabetes include following glycemic index, using plate method and carbohydrate counting.  Each of these takes a unique approach to help people limit their sugar intake.

If you choose to follow glycemic index, it is important to educate yourself and perhaps even print out a chart.  Glycemic index can be used as a guide to know how much sugar a food contains.  Foods that are high in sugars have high glycemic indices above 70.  Moderate to low glycemic index foods range below that.  If you are following the glycemic index it is recommended that you eat foods that have low to moderate ratings.  Examples of these foods are fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  This diet does not tell you how many grams of sugar or specify calories.  Use foods with low glycemic index for diabetic snacks.

The plate method is a good way for people to visualize their diet changes.  Using the plate method, the plate is divided into fourths.  The first half of the plate is to be filled with non-starchy vegetables.  Then choose one quarter for meat and the last quarter can contain a carbohydrate.  Using this method, a small glass of milk can also be consumed.  Again this diet does not help with portion sizes but instead helps you to improve your diet by including more vegetables.

Counting carbohydrates should be done with the guidance of a nutritionist.  This method helps the patient to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in a food to prevent large changes in blood sugar.  The dietician will also determine how much carbohydrate the person can have.

Using these methods it is possible to lose weight quickly and improve blood sugar readings.  Always consult with your doctor before starting any diet plan.
