Organic Shampoo: Clean Hair, Clean Earth
Using organic shampoo rather than conventional shampoo comes with many benefits, some that you see and some that you don’t. It’s good for your hair, and it’s good for the earth as well, for a number of ways.
Looking Good With Organic Shampoo
The reason we use shampoo in the first place is, of course, to keep our hair clean and looking nice. So you wouldn’t use organic shampoo if it didn’t fulfill these purposes. In fact, organic shampoo is often much better for your hair, not because it contains any ‘magic’ ingredient, but because it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals that can strip your hair of natural oils and leave it brittle. Did you know that the only reason we need conditioner is because our shampoo actually damages the hair, and conditioner helps heal it?
Look for organic shampoos with ingredients that you recognize. Anything with an alcohol or alcohol-related ingredient will be harsh on your hair; instead look for naturally derived, plant-based ingredients. These will clean your hair without damaging it, and will cause no harm to your scalp or skin from exposure.
Organic Shampoo: Good For The Earth
Just as what we put on our bodies impacts our bodies, keep in mind that what runs down the drain doesn’t magically disappear. One of the major ingredients in conventional shampoo is an ingredient called sodium laurel sulphate, or SLS. Increased use of this chemical has caused higher percentages in our water, which has been linked to several types of environmental harm.
Read the bottle of whatever shampoo you are currently using, and then do a Google search on some of the ingredients you don’t recognize. If it’s not organic shampoo, you will probably find that some of these ingredients are used in science labs to break apart cells, or even on airfields to de-ice airplane equipment. Not exactly the kind of stuff you want running out into our waterways, let alone rubbed into your skin.
Choosing organic shampoo helps with both issues; it’s good for your hair, and good for the earth, and there’s no question or ambiguity about what is in the product that you’re using.
